Recommended Iconic Yet Must-Try Vietnam Coffee
Brown Coffee / Milk Coffee
Brown / milk coffee is a strong, dark-roasted Robusta brew mixed with sweetened condensed milk. It is thick, creamy and very sweet taste that heals & give us some energy. You can choose hot or ice, or flat white or whole white, differs the amount of milk, to meet your appetite. Interestingly, the name of this coffee differs in North & South in Vietnam. Hanoi(North) named cà phê nâu as a brown coffee & Ho Chi Minh(South) named cà phêsữa as a milk coffee. It tells Hanoi influenced by French & Chinese culture to define by color while Ho Chi Minh influenced by American culture to describe ingredients.
Extension Version of Brown Coffee / Milk Coffee, Nut Coffee
There are several kinds of nut milk mixed with brown coffee like coconut milk, hazelnut milk, almond milk, or cashew nut milk. I recommend coconut coffee since it was the most flavored nutty taste.
Egg Coffee
Egg Coffee tastes like a Eggnog. It is a cup of espresso or robusta coffee with whipping raw egg yolks with sweetened condensed milk to create a thick, airy, custard-like cream on the top. To be honest, I don’t like raw egg that it was very challenging to try. In the end, it didn’t taste or feel like raw egg at all and I felt like eating pudding like a sweets category.
Not Coffee, but Egg Beer
Egg beer is a unique, creamy, and sweet beverage originating from Hanoi, Vietnam, which blends chilled beer with a rich, whipped egg yolk foam. There was a tiktoker introducing this egg beer in front of my table. I love beer, but I had no clue how it tastes after drinking an egg coffee. So I’ve asked him for to sip his egg beer for tryout. It tastes like very sweetened Co Ca Cola float. It was not for me since I’m a type of person like eating pizza with beer, but people who loves drink a beer with sweets would love this. There are beers like Red Eye, mixed with tomato & Ginger Shandy, mixed with ginger ale or there are a paring of wine with pizza or chocolate & fruits so why not. Further more, its drinking style is unique and reminds me of Hoppy Japan’s beloved beer-taste beverage often enjoyed with shochu. So they give you a set of Egg beer with a can of beer. You can add beer as you drink as well as you can order additional whipped egg yolk foam that it could be an endless drink.
Salt Coffee
There are two types of salt coffee. One is salted cream foam top of brown coffee, which is a major to offer at cafe while the other one is a coffee that brewed with coffee beans and a pinch of salt. The coffee farmer told me the idea comes to spice up by simply adding salt in black coffee or Latte. Vietnam wether is humid & hot, so it’s nice to adequate salt intake. It made sense to me and I thought this actually applies in Japan Summer so it may be one of wellness drink as a trend someday!
My Favorite
It was simply shocking for me to drink a robusta black coffee the most out of 50 types of coffee that I’ve had in this travel. It’s mild bitter taste compared to espresso and it’s easy to drink. I like ice better than hot is you drink just a coffee. It’d be great to pare with a slice of cake for hot one. I was too full to have a cake with at that time. Anyway, I normally drink espresso, black coffee, and latte at my home, so I prefer a strong taste. I highly recommended this if you are like me. It may be good experience both a simple black coffee & one of top3 coffee above to compare for first time trip in Vietnam.
There are approximately 340K cafe in Vietnam. (Ipsos 2022) . It’s quit competitive & each cafe presents differently. You can check out major cafe to private like hidden gem plenty. It’s nice to have a moment to recharge your energy at cafe while traveling Vietnam. This time I’ve tried 68 cafes in Hanoi, Da Nang, Da Lat, & Ho Chi Minh. I wish I could visit a coffee city, Buôn Ma Thuột, but not this time. This article introduces major cafes in every area in Vietnam. Listing cafe locates everywhere, so you can copy & paste the name of cafe to search near by you in google map if you’d like to visit.
There are a few more than 4 listed cafes below, but these 4 are what I’ve seen a lot in each city.
KATINANT – Stylish Cafe
There are interesting fusion coffee like Avocado Young Coconut & Latte Baba Nana. There are teas, mix fruit juice, and food that seems to be delicious. Some of architect & space design were stunning. You can search typing “stylish katinant in Vietnam” in google map. It’s easy to check an image and spot at the same time to find cafe like below.

CỘNG CÀ PHÊ – Military Style Cafe
Founded in Hanoi. Based concept is good old days of 70s-80s. The space is inspired by the era before the unification of North and South Vietnam, particularly retro military uniforms and the lifestyle of the communist era, and is famous for its signature Coconut Coffee. You can find Cong Cafe easily since every cafe’s color is unified in green especially in Hanoi. I personally liked Cong Caphe Trich Sai. You can enjoy coffee having a nice opened view of lake choosing 1st fl. or 2nd fl.
Highland Coffee – No.1 chain cafe
Highland coffee is like Starbucks. It’s everywhere. The undisputed market leader with the highest store count, offering a premium, modern experience in Vietnam. Freeze coffee & tea are good. I should have tried the taste of coffee to compare, but I was filled up with other coffee so I didn’t tryout this time. Freeze coffee & tea refresh you out in hot weather like Da Nang & Ho Chi Minh. The architect is quite unique in Da Nang & especially Da Lat near by lake. I wanted to go there, but it was not opened around 7a.m. sadly.

Cafe Where Offers Speciality Coffee
It seems chain cafe but only 1 or 2 cafe locates in each city. They offer a high quality coffee that tastes really delicious. Every cafe’s barista consults what coffee would be the best for you like how you feel now, what kind of taste you’d like to try. More so, they give you a coffee story like an origin, farm, the flavor, how to select beans, how to enjoy coffee or their experiences etc. deeply if you ask and there are not many customers there. I enjoyed conversations with receiving their passion.
La Viet offers a premier Vietnamese coffee brand focused on elevating local Arabica quality through sustainable, farm-to-cup practices. Operating as both a specialty roaster and a popular, rustic-industrial cafe in Da Lat, they offer high-quality beans, brewing workshops, and unique, modern, and traditional, Vietnamese-style coffee. I had a cinnamon rum lavender phin coffee, which was not on menu. It was so yummy & warmed me up well.
XLIII Specialty Coffee – Several Kinds of Speciality Coffee w/ Coffee Origin
XLIII Coffee is a coffee brand serving specialty coffee to customers who are always concerned about the taste of origin, concerning about sustainability. They give you a little story with a card about coffee origin. I had an espresso. XLIII was the only cafe that had crema, thin layer of light-brown foam as far as I remembered. This tells you the bean is fresh & it’s made with high pressure to process that pulls out bitterness & sweetness of coffee beans. The taste was so delicious.
You may also like an unique private cafe like hidden gem. You can check each article by place where you visit.
Introducing cafe I personally picked from uniqueness & comfortable atmosphere in Hanoi. I think it was 40K-60K per cup, so it’s reasonable. It’s funny picked up cafe ended up to gather at a particular area in Old Quarter.

Train Street
Train Spot Cafe(9AM-9PM)
Train street cafe is a famous spot to visit. It’s thrilling experience!! Train pass by right in front of you while having a lunch or drinking a cup of coffee. There are cafes or restaurants along Đ.Lê Duẩn street. Train Spot Cafe was the best spot for me to enjoy the coconut coffee while train passing by. Train Spot Cafe locates at the end of train street near Hanoi Train Station/Ga Hà Nội so it was a bit longer to enjoy its events. I was lucky that train passed me by twice although it was not the time that was on listing. So it may be better to stay an hour or two since it’s not on time. Night time view shows different scenery too. So it’s nice to visit here if you have an enough time.
The way to get there, There are two ways whether you enter from Hanoi Train Street Entrance (North) or Train Spot Cafe(South) near Hanoi Train Station/Ga Hà Nội. You can click the address below to open in google map to get a direction or search “Đ.Lê Duẩn” street.

Hidden Gem Cafe Hanoi (7AM – 10PM)
It’s really Hidden Gem. Very cozy! I had a delicious Latte & spring roll for my breakfast. It’s very close to Old Quarter or Ha Long Tour bus meeting point,160 Trần Quang Khải, walking for 3min., so it’s nice to have a breakfast while waiting.
The café features Harry Potter meticulously themed decor, including iconic wizarding accessories and cozy seating, creating an inviting atmosphere for fans and non-fans alike. It’s quite greasy food & sweet drinks, so it’s nice to have one when you need to recharge your energy here.
Get the feeling of Vietnam atmosphere while resting. 1st. fl is opened space & 2nd. fl. is decorated with beautiful lanterns at sealing. Milk coffee warmed me up for very early morning at 6am.
The café is the origin of Egg Coffee. It is authentic, historic, and utterly delicious experience. It’s the one and only home of the true egg coffee legend. It’s a bit scary to walk in hallway, but it’s normal inside. Egg Coffee is an espresso with egg yolk foam on top & tastes like Eggnog or Pudding taste, so it’s worth trying if you like it. I’m not much into raw egg, so it was challenging for me. But it didn’t taste or texture like a raw egg at all. It was sweets more than coffee for me. Scoop up to have this drink.
It’s very cozy atmosphere with a high ceiling and the waiter speaks English that there are a lot of English speaker’s tourists here. They offers coffee & bakery like croissants sandwich & pastries. I didn’t see fast food like MacDonalds etc. so it’s nice break-off from local Vietnam food for a time being here. Comparing Egg coffee with the origin, Cafe Giang, York foam was more thicker & less sweeter yet it is still very sweet. I’ve tried Egg Beer with a tiktoker who jump in to join my table. It tasted like a Co Ca Cola float. It’s nice trying if you like a soda float. I’m the person who love a beer with pizza, so it was not for me, but worth trying.
Lam Coffee & Tea – Weasel Specialty 32 Hang Bo (8AM – 11PM)
This cafe offers speciality coffee like Coffee Luwak, Weasel. It really surprises me with rich flavors & delightful berry notes. The Salt Coffee Latte impresses with its robust caffeine kick. Lam was the best coffee serving cafe for me in Hanoi, so I strongly recommended if you are seeking for tasty coffee. They do have a several bean selection that you can buy for souvenirs too.
There are eSIM available at Klook,Booking.com etc. You can purchase anywhere. It seems “Vinaphone” & “Viettel” works well. It was so easy to set up. I just needed to press a button “activate” and set mobile internet to use eSIM at the airport. I can connect local internet right away. I thought 5GB would be enough for me since I don’t game or watch movie etc.,but I end up using 10GB using google map for almost 18hr/day for 6days. The cost was less than 1,000円/$12. It really saved me from my very first day arrival to reach my driver to find since I couldn’t find him for an hour…
Double Check a MeetingPlace
Organization you booked or listed posting info. on web are not fully shared with local coordinators or posting info. are wrong. It’s hassling and confusing for checking while traveling although you think you’ve prepared beforehand. It was a def. good lesson.
1.Pick-up meeting point at airport
There are TOO MANY pickups that it’s very difficult to find my driver even I’ve requested to show my name at board at arrival terminal. My driver whatsapp me where he was on a picture since he can’t speak in English. Although, I need to ask info. desk to ask where it is, but she didn’t know either. Some other company’s driver helped me to find him. It took me more than an hour. It is nice to have an image of marked the place at map & a picture of meeting place so that you know where you need to go.
2.Tour or local bus meeting point
There are a lot of no sign for a bus stop that tour setup as a meeting point. It’s better asking to request an exact address, google map link, and spotted map image. Surprisingly, listed info. on web and tour guide mentioned info. are similar but different place on Google map. It’s very confusing. Further more, the bus booking coordinator directed me a wrong meeting point address and google map link for heads-up unbelievably. This was for a limousine bus to go to another city. Anyway it was creepiest place that I was arrived for a meeting point where was dark outside mountain with no lights so I whatsapp him my current place and send photo, then he gave me a correct google map and spotted map place.
3.Taxi meeting point
Posting address isn’t full specified address like a just district, not street address. So,Ask receptionists or whoever you’re contacting for a correct address to note in your smartphone memo so that taxi driver can pick you up in a right place. Vietnam’s address sometimes post only district, not street #. It confuses between taxi drivers and requested people. Also, save your route in Google map so that you can check and show to a driver if they seem to take you to a wrong places. This didn’t happen, but I’ve requested to take me to the particular cafe that showed in my Google Map so my driver set my phone as a navigator to take me there, which was nice.
It’s nice to have a taxi app since the price is so reasonable like approx. 15,000 VND (87 yen/ 57 cents in 2026) per kilometer. I used both “Grab” & “be”, which are like Uber. “Grab” can use credit card & “be” is more for local user. I used “be” to go around city if I can’t catch a driver at “Grab”. You can pick either car or bike. Green shirt driver is Grab driver & yellow shirt driver is “be” driver as you can see on picture.
Good points
– Reserve your destination a head of time.
– No overcharge than displayed cost.
– Credit card or cash available.
– Easy to contact your driver by chat with translation automatically applied.
– Easy to find a reserved car by license plate’s #.
Disappointed points
– Some driver never come or they say they’ve arrived although the map has shown they are not arrived.
– Live screen is not working correctly. For example, it’s said the car will arrive in 3 min. and the car seemed to be near by on map, but it arrived 45min. after.
– Many of drivers doesn’t speak English.
Tips
– From airport to city, highly recommended to book at your hotel or travel agency for your arrival pickup, because app driver is not allowed to wait in front of terminal so that you have to look for your booked car at parking lots. City to airport is ok using app.
– Cash is cheaper than credit card to save handling fees or bank rate at the time.
Traffic in Vietnam: Kaos
Just a little info.here. Car holder has to pay 100% tax, so 86% of Vietnamese population owns 3 or 4 bikes instead of car.
Communication apps
Download
– Translator Go:iOS,Android
*Trial for free. Free still works.
– Google Translation: iOS / Android
– nomadtable: iOS / Android
– Some chat tool like whatsapp, line, kakao, we Chat
Most of local people don’t speak English except Ho Chi Min. Many Vietnamese prepare to use “google translation app” to communicate that was a bit interesting. “Translator Go” works to talk with a Taxi driver since there are two microphones & speaker that we could talk while driving. I didn’t use “normadtable” for this time since I was busy working and looking around city in between. Anyway, this app can find local activities or travelers who are there on the same day to hang out with. It’s very nice to collect updated information if you have time. Lastly, I normally use Line & whatsapp, and Line didn’t work much to get connected with local coordinators. So whatsapp is recommended if you can’t connect there.
Nice to Bring
Jacket
It’s chilly or cold in the morning & night. The ave. of weather was like this. Hanoi 12℃, Danang 22℃, DaLat 18℃, Ho Chi Min 33℃. I guess it’s closed to mountain or ocean. Also, a lot of Vietnamese ride their bikes so that they wear jacket instead of coat, so it suits local style too. Also air conditioning in taxi and bus were freezing cold. I thought jacket could be annoyed to bring but Japan was still cold like 2℃. I reluctantly took it, but it turned out well.
Skin & Hair Care & Beauty Items
It is a very few amenities like body soap or shower jel & shampoo & tooth brush. It’s better to bring a few sun screen, insect repellent spray, skin care, facial soap, shampoo, conditioners if you are not staying luxury hotel. Also, it was great for me to bring dry shampoo & conditioner & body soap because some city hotel’s shower had a very low pressure that barely wash.
Mobile Battery
It was better bringing 2 instead of 1 for those who use a lot of taxi or google maps etc. Also, there is not much plug in at the airport. So it is better for 2 to bring if you use PC & mobile too if you have to wait for flight. In my case, every flight was delayed 1-2 hours for I don’t know what reasons. Fortunately, I had 2 since my company told me to bring. It was actually great advise.
Tissue & Alcohol Tissue & Hand Towel
There are a few no toilet paper or out of paper especially at tour place’s restroom. Also, the toilet was not clean as well as there are no hand soap and paper towel. It’s nice to have Alcohol wet tissue to clean toilet & hands.
Mask
My noise & throat fucked up from dusts & stinky smell. Mask could be a protection. It’s rare for me to be like this even I’ve been to China & India where have similar situation. I really wished to bring one or I should have bought it at a drug store. I’ll bring it next time for sure.
Buy cigarettesfordesignated heated or electricity tobacco users
It’s not allowed to bring designated heated or electricity tobacco in Vietnam in 2026. You can buy at a duty free shop or covenant stores in Vietnam for cheap. Marlboro costs 35,000〜40,000 VND per a box. 180 – 240 yen in JPN / 1.35 – 1.54 USD. Saigon Tobacco is a lot cheaper as well. But you may want to smoke in your country before your leave or in your transition area. Buy a pack or two for your comfortable travel.
